Subject: charging probs

hi guys
i think i need to source an alternator for my zzr 600d
currently only getting out 12v dc from reg rec unit and it should be a bout 14v at 4000 rpm, upon checking ac voltage on each circuit i am just about reaching 18v ac when i beleive it should be around 40v ac from each circuit , can anyone advise further on this , or point me in the direction , or even perhaps source me an alternator at modest cost .i am in the uk and dont mind paying postage etc
