IMPRESSIONS OF A PAST
The camp fires still burn
as ghost dancers step soundlessly
in swirling, dancing smoke
spiraling across the night sky.
In the flickering shadows
of the night fires
a she-wolf stands alert,
twin points of incandescence watching
as the ghost dance unfolds
past the meeting point of days.
Sleeping under leather shelters,
the tribe receives the vision,
awakening the urge
to strike camp and relocate
knowing the place has become stagnant,
threatened by disease,
reeking of death.
The shaman, in his dream,
unveils the message of the dancers,
the motherly instinct of the wolf:
“Go! Break camp, move on
where the wolf howls under pale moonlight,
where water and visions are clear.”
In obedience to the voice of Spirit
as in times uncounted but remembered,
the morning sun welcomes the tribe
breaking camp, preparing to trek:
no one will turn to look back
upon the old place
where the smoke still rises
in a silent farewell.
