First of all, I am offended to think anyone could conceive such beliefs (your work being "bottom of the pile garbage"). I'm sure this is just part of the point you're trying to make, but it stirred up some thoughts.

Putting someone down is usually done out of fear... I agree. Fear that they could never measure up, therefore lowering someone else down to their level temporarily empowers them. But lets not confuse the issue, because that can not come CLOSE to being on the same level as criticism. Constructive criticism is an art... not a simple bash-fest.

Even dear Webster states that criticism is "the art of evaluating or analyzing works of art or literature"...

it seems Webster also knows what these people lack... ART... in the form of learning... through studying, observation or experience.

Hmmmm... nope... the only assumption I can see here is that these characters would dare to consider themselves scholarly in critiquing.
