The London Mela burst onto the scene in 2003 as the most significant South Asian festival in Britain, presenting a rich tableau of colour and creativity. This year it promises to be even bigger and better comprising everything from classical music to cutting edge urban grooves, traditional dance to carnival, and mainstream pop to stand-up comedy.

The Mela will feature artists from the UK and the subcontinent and involve all of London's Asian communities, featuring work inspired by and originating from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the global Asian Diaspora.

The Mela is a festival for everyone. A spectacular occasion for all the family.

Presenting an exciting programme of classical dance and music performances from leading companies such as Akademi, complemented by workshops in traditional artforms and playing host to displays from museums and galleries, promoting South Asian culture and heritage. If you would like to find out more about the activities taking place in the Heritage Maidan please see the Mela Kahania (pdf), which tells the stories behind the the art. From Kathak to Odissi dance, Mehendi to Daker Saaj crafts, learn the history of South Asian culture by joining the world of Mela Kahania.

Mela Week - 2004
kicks off with Dhandiya In The Square, sensational dancing in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 8 August, followed by Mela Club on Saturday 14 August hosted by Mumbai Rouge, London's hottest club night.

"Mela" is a Sanskrit word meaning "gathering", which describes all sorts of community events and festivals and originated on the Indian subcontinent.
