The Mayor of London and Diwali in London Committee invite you to Diwali on the Square

Date: Sunday 7th November 2004
Time: 4:00-8:00pm Admission FREE

Once again, the Mayor of London invites Londoners to celebrate Diwali, 'the Festival of Light', in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 7 November. The festival is organised together with the Diwali in London committee and is supported by India Tourism, ICICI Bank, Sunrise Radio and Zee TV. The free event will present a colourful programme of music, dance and displays for all Londoners to enjoy.

The Square will be decorated with spectacular light displays for Diwali. There will be food stalls serving delicious bites and a main stage featuring a variety of performances.

The Diwali Festival has religious significance for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and is celebrated by many communities throughout the capital.

Greetings from the Mayor

'London is the most diverse, cosmopolitan city in the world. A joyful occasion like Diwali is a wonderful opportunity for us all to celebrate the richness and diversity of London.

'Diwali on the Square this year will take place on Sunday 7th November, bringing London’s different faith communities together to celebrate the festival of light, which symbolises the power of good to triumph over evil.

'The twenty first century will be the Asian century. London’s Indian community makes a substantial contribution to London’s economy, its culture and diversity. Furthermore, the strong links of London’s Indian community with India as an emerging global economic power will help strengthen London as the gateway to Europe for Asian business and culture. Diwali is an exciting vibrant event in London’s cultural calendar. I warmly welcome you all to come and join in on this year’s festive celebrations.

'Have a Happy Diwali!'

Ken Livingstone
Mayor of London
