Bombay Dreams Heading Home
The Bollywood musical extravaganza Bombay Dreams may be playing to Indian audiences by the end of the year when the top West End musical tours Asia, its producer said today.
The biggest challenge will be transporting the sets. We plan a full Indian cast,” said Kerry Comerford, general manager of producer-composer Lord Lloyd Webber’s The Really Useful Company.
Comerford, visiting Bombay to explore venues and finalise tour dates, said performances of the musical could be seen in India before the end of the year, and she hopes it will travel next year to Beijing, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Seoul, as well as South Africa and Dubai.
The lavish musical about India’s movie industry was a hit in London’s West End, but struggled on Broadway.
The London version, which was seen by more than 1.5 million people, returned its £3.8 million production costs within 15 months of opening.
But critics panned the New York version as bland, and it didn’t recoup its reported £7.4 million investment in an eight-month run.
“The Broadway version was quite radically changed because it was for an American audience that didn’t know as much about Bollywood ... so it lost some of its charm and grace,” Comerford said.
Set in Bombay, the hub of India’s film industry also known as Bollywood, Bombay Dreams tells the story of a poor young man who dreams of being a movie star.
The musical parodies hip-swivelling dance numbers in crowded Bombay slums and opulent movie sets complete with fountains of water – a Bollywood hallmark where the drenched, lead actors gyrate in what’s termed the “wet sari scene.”
“I’m quite excited that its going to tour,” said Rahman. ”The music will probably be a mix of the best of both the London and the Broadway versions.”
