Subject: Fwd: "there is NO adult autistics"...

Below is a transcript of a conversation that took place on 01-09-04 in one of the "live" autism-related chat channel between me (scap) and a member of Arkansas State Autism Board, who allegedly is an HFA adult with four college degree (or at least they said so). (S)he was using the screen name "Marvelous". Names of the channel and the other chatters have been hidden to protect privacy - however, full transcript is available.
I will not make any comments - see for yourselves.
If anyone would like to inform the Arkansas autism society board that autistic/ASD adults DO exist in their state, or to make any comments about their policy to serve ONLY "parents and professionals", or to contact that alleged "born-again Christian HFA adult with four college degree", please contact:

OK, there it is, friends. See for yourselves...and note the attitude of this "born-again Christian" alleged "HFA with four college degrees" board member.
My apologies if anyone believes that my responses were too emotional, but hope you understand why - especially those familiar with my situation at the moment.

ah hi marvelous
hi Marvelous
Hi All.
hi Marvelous, it's marvelous to see you
It has been a while since I have been on.
Over a year.
hi Marvelous
i dotn think we'vemet before Marvelous
I came in about 1 1/2 years ago.
I had trouble finding this again.
I do remember some of the chatters from back then.
Are any still around here?
Iam a HF Non-Nuero_Typical.
I am Very High Functioning & I am on my state Autism board.
I also have achieved 4 college degrees.
thats good Marvelous
I was neding soem fundraising ideas for my Autism Society.
Do any of you have some fundraising ideas for me?
not sure Marvelous
We are trying to raise enough money to hire an Executive Director for our Autism Society.
how about raising some money to provide jobs for autistic adults
I am a Very High Functioning Autistic who has earned 4 degrees.
wow
thats cool
hire the Exec on voluntary basis first and have THEM generate enough revenue and actually EARN their salary
And I am on our State Autism board.
what state?
No one would volunteer fro a 5 day 8-5 job, would they?
Arkansas.,
well, that's what is commonly suggested for autistic adults...why don't some well-wishers follow their own advice
We have so many great ideas that we want to do for the parents & their kids but need a Ex. Dor. first!
you can invite some retired exec with good pension...they can afford to volunteer
lol scap
Marvelous...why just for "parents and their kids"????? what about adults?
lol scap :)
how about that Grasso dude from NYSE? he just retired with 188 mil package, he can afford
Adults is our future goal.
Does ark. have good programs for autistics?
No.
what do you mean future goal??? when your "volunteers" OWN children grow up??? what about TODAY'S ADULTS??/
well....neither does my wonderful state
write a letter an exutiive of a company, they may know someone
In our state most of ours are kids or teenagers.
Marv, that's because you IGNORE adults
that's plain discrimination by age AND deceptive advertising on behalf of ASA
I haven't met any other adults here besides my self.
have you tried to?
keep your eyes open and you will
exactly
But our membership is made up of parents of kids & teenagers.
then it's not representative
not exclusively
and your thing should be named "Autism society of children and parents ONLY", otherwise it is deceptive advertising
We are trying to work with their needs.
trying but not working
and not nearly with the same expertise and vigor as with your privilege members' needs
Adults is not our problem yet. We are dealing with what we have NOW!
????
well, you have adults NOW
there is a Autism society already
only you guys prefer to discriminate against them
I am talking abiut in Arkansas.
then you ignore and deny their existence
which is discrimination against them and their needs
They haven't gto in contact with us so we don't know if they exist here.
when they do "get in contact", they get denied help and even chastised for trying
i know what i'm talking about
hi gettin
have you tried to locate them, to invite them to join,
Not here totally.
to ASK them what's their needs are and HOW you can help them
But they have to let us know they exist.
Marv, you said Arkansas? i'll personally locate a bunch for you
and will tell them that according to their state board member, they do not exist and they do not have needs
Hey scap do that here LOL
Our society has been quiet for a whiel because of low finaces we are just starting to get active again!
and when they "let you know they exist"....i know how they get treated
hm, I actually know someone in Little Rock who likely fits the Asperger's criteria (though as a techie he's missed a dx)
it does not take finances to advocate for each other
who wants to, seeks the ways. who doesn't, seeks excuses
so far all i've heard from you here was excuses
We haev to have a Ex. Director to man the office, to answer all the phone calls.
another excuse, and lame again
So who is going to do thsi then?
you the board, you the members
why not you?
you the people
We have regular jobs & families!
so?
that's not a valid excuse either
we can't spend 8 hours a day there.
if you have time to do things for children, you have time to do for adults
'answer the phone calls' can mean listen and reply to recorded messages
exactly
how about a website and email?
Remember, we are just starting the Society back up?
how about advocating and simply writing letters to help people once in a while
so?
Here, an Executive Director of such an organization, full time, would be about a $40k to $75k per year position
it seems like you are starting it on the wrong foot already
Yes, & we don't have teh money to pay that.
$75K just to answer "sorry, we do not serve adults"??
I am trying to find a way to raise that $40,000 so we can hore that person.
Remember we have to start from teh bottom up.
well sorry, i won't help you...although i was in charge of a fundraising campaign for underprivileged community college students
well, hire an HFA adult
I already have a job.
there are plenty with college or even graduate degree
i didn't say hire yourself
there are lots of them unemployed although well educated
maybe someone out of state
We have a lot of great ideas but we need money to do them.
btw, i'm going to quote your words on the forums for ASD adults...hope you get some response then
For $75k the person would be working 50 to 75 hours per week, and produce a website, quarterly or monthly newsletter, organize and attend events, and be in contact with local gov't
yes, and keep answering, "sorry we cannot help you, hope you find help somewhere else
Lxxxxx, that is what we need but first we need to raise that kind of money.
and be "celebrated" at fancy banquets sponsored by members' dues
when you raise money, first you're gonna buy liability insurance...when those frustrated adults sue you for discrimination and for deceptive advertising
you will need that first
Scap, you have some ideas but it takes money to do them.
i do have some ideas and experience on fundraising...
that is what i am trying to find.
and nope, some things can be done without any money
You mean like run a state Autism society?
recently, a small group of people took on an advocacy project that possibly leads to overhaul of DDS in the entire state
Who pays for the condferences & newsletters then?
no, i mean such as at least try to help people for whom there is no help
why all you are willing to do is schmooze at the conferences?
I am just trying to hlp us get on our feet first!
people need hands-on help, today, now, yesterday
Not at out confereces.
yeah right
We want peopel like Tony Atwood.
We had temple Grandin.
a friend recently was invited to speak at such conference...she is autistic...of all speakers, she was NOT offered hotel accommodations, let alone speaker's fee
well, first you "want" people you *say* "dont' exist to your state"
WE pay all of our speakers!
again, if this is the start you plan, you already starting on the wrong foot
Our conferences is our biggest fund raiser.
But again it takes money to set up a conference.
conferences, fundraisers...yet when people ask for practical (and cost-free) help, they get turned away
sometimes just a letter or a phone call would do...but all you want to do is "conferences'
Scap, afetr we get on our feet we will be able to get back to doing that.
you won't
excuses, excuses
well, i'm off my feet now, but i was able to actually help in couple of such situations
Conferences is WHAT EVERYBODY wants!
?????????????????????????????
hey folks, what you want: adequate helpful services, your rights protected and needs met, or "conferences"???
let's take a vote
so nobody speaks on our behalf
The parents & professionals that deal with Autistic kids want conferences.
i'm not "everybody", and i can tell you what i want (or rather need)...only you wont' listen
again "parents and professionals"???
there are people mistreated, abused and discriminated "NOW"
They are the ones that pack out the conferences.
excuse me, are you listening? i'm saying that there are others beside them
But they make up our membership.
well, you need to expand your membership
Anyone can join.
well, why would i join if i keep hearing that "the majority are parents and pros, and we cater to them, and don't give a damn about you"???
But we can't go out & find them & force them to join.
but you turn them away when they try to join
and actually, you should be going out and reaching out to them
They are the ones taking care of you.
????
of me??
Parents , teachers, doctors.
here in NZ the autism society is great help if you're a parent, maybe if you're a child, not if you're an adult
case workers.
Marvelous, may I ask what your connection is?
Marv, NO ONE "takes care" of me...i'm an adult, i'm done with a school, and i'm not under care of any doctors
yet i do have a serious situation requiring ASD community intervention...care to help personally, Marvelous?
I am a HF autistic who is on our state Autism borad.
as a board member, you are in a position to intervene...care to?
I use to be in herea year ago.
which state?
Ark.
hey room, note how he will keep ignoring my request
We are trying to restart our society!
sic scap
and i'm trying to ask you as a state board member for help
and you keep evading
and everyone can see that
Go to your state Autism Society!
Each State has one.
i don't think autistic adults need to reach out if they feel they have a reasonable reason, and frankly i've seen too many burned by professionals
whew, that was nice, i thought he'd tell me to go to...um, another location
so i don't blame them for not wanting to reach out
No, scap I am a BA Christian.
well, my lawyer says that the more publicity for my case, the better...that's why i'm asking you...btw, some people froom other states agreed to intevene
I am JUST trying to get our society up & running!
you can be BA, BB...but you don't act like one
you didn't even ask what my story is and what kind of help i'm asking for
BA?
born-again?
Yes.
and my state "Autistic Children, Parents and Pros ONLY Society" "doesn't serve adults, that was the answer i got...any other Marvelous ideas????
I came on here trying to get help to help restart our society.
i'm waiting for the answers
well, you don't want to help, but you demand help for money...sorry, i wont' "help" you
after being told to "Go to...!"
I am dealing with what we have in Arkansas, children & teenagers!
do you want me to prove that you DO have adults in your state? do you want some messages and calls and letters to your board?
& we are just starting to have teenagers!
We just want to know they are out there.
and everyone in the room, please note that request for help from an ASD adult got ignored by a board member
Wea want to expand our membersip.
you wanted people to listen to your request for help...but didn't even bother to listen what's mine
Scap, would you rather all state Societies fold & there be no help for Autistics.
last month, in a local newspaper there was a story of a woman ended up in a same legal plight like mine, only she was not ASD, but black and gay. Several organization of that kind backed her up
they didn't say any bull you just gave me
they just backed her up
i'd rather they stop DISCRIMINATING AND ADVERTISING FALSELY
marvelous, in some places that would just mean no help for parents
We can't do ANYThing until we get off the dround. We have to start somewhere.
once you get off the ground, you will keep discriminating because that's how you already are and that's what your "majority membership" would be
the adults count too as well as the parents
parents != autistics
other states societies are off the ground, but they still discriminate against adults...explain that???
We can't do much UNTIL we get off the ground.
btw, i'm a parent as well
Marvelous, stop giving broken record
as i said, i'm on the ground atm, but i didn't make that excuse when people asked for help
I am just trying to help revive our socirty.
and was able to make a difference
but when i ask......
* Marvelous has left #(the channel)
well, you'll have to "help revive" it without my input
and note he didn't even ask what my story is and to even see whether he's able to do anything
* mxxxxx gives scap a standing ovation :)
you know, i think the best advocates should be recruited from the department stores' sales clerks
you know why?
the persistent ones?
nope
because they got right attitude - they always ask, "WHAT are you looking for?" and "HOW can i help you?"
or right training, probably
have you guys heard that in Canada HFA adults petitioned to the Health Ministry to revoke grants paid to their Autism Society for the same discrimination reason
Its like when Jxxxxx found out he was AS he was told I cant dx you that because according to the state adults dont have autism
exactly, that's their story to justify denial of services for adults
wow, so everyone on hte spectrum is magically cured once they reach the age of majority. what a medical breakthrough! Lol
Thats what he told Jxxxx he didnt have it anymore
lol axxxxx what a crock!
I know
But thats the states Logic
He didnt get dx as a child therefore he is HEALED LOL
lol Axxxxxx :)
because he coped with society NOT!
maybe being on teh spectrum over 18 isnt pc.......... >>>>
