PE is horrible for some autistic kids.
for daughter, whose balance and coordination issues create a distinct difference with her and the other kids (they were supposed to be playing basketball, volloey ball etc. and the teacher kept telling her she cannot try to dribble with both hands that it was below the grade level... well she had trouble dribbling with both hands even... and running, she has such low muscle tone that she would be not even halfway around the track before the others were finished!.

anyways, those things can make the child stick out so much, that it becomes a source of teasing. as for her it did.

another aspect is what happened to son.
althbough he is thet super athlete, having the balace of a circus performer, his abilities is not what made him stick out, except that he could things faster, higher, etc. then others.... but it was his lack of "sportsmanship" abilities.
he would not tolerate anyone NOT knowing how to dribble, how to volley the ball, and then it gets worse. he HAD to be on the winning team, the fastest, etc. if he was NOT, he would throw the balls, against anything, anyone.... or worse.

so, the competativeness of gym class was very difficult for him to handle... luckily, he was the fastest kid, had great skills etc. for individual things, but the team concept was just way to much for him.,
now, finally this year, after deliberately teaching him to learn how to loose (by playing yu-gi-oh card games with him) he is doing much better with that. so perhaps now he wont be so upset with loosing a game in gym if he was in gym at a school.
