when was told by a "professional" that son needed to join a team sport because he was so hyper -to burn off that energy, and because he "needed experience in playing fairly with others"....
joined him into soccer... at age 4-5.
he did head stands all alone in the middle of the field.
ran around, after his imaginary playthings, and sometimes kicked at the ball, if he happened to see it... even into his own goal.
by 6 he quit soccer, and tried hockey.
after the expense of equipment (now we are not talking about a pair of running shoes, and shorts, but a full set of protective equiptment)... his favorite thing to do with the stuff was to jump off high places, and roll around on the grass wearing his helmet, and all protective gear.
he had trouble with the skating, more trouble with rules, following the rules, and the fast pace of the game... he started skating around in circles... circling the centre red circle or the blue ones at the ends of the rink... he LOVED to do that... and enjoyed his hockey career... UNTIL.. he turned 10.
it was at ten, that he realized that he was NOT following the rules, he HATED it when the team lost, (*he actually became aware of loosing or winning now), he was teased at times by other team members because he was NOT a good skater, or a good team player, or a fair/good looser...
his self esteem was suffering, and was SO glad the season was over.
asked him if he wanted to join the next yr. (although was secretly hoping he didnt want to)... and he said "NO WAY!".

now, this is son, who is VERY atheletic, unlike daughter and self.
son was the kid who rode his two wheeler without training wheels, with his diapers on, at age 21 months.
he did full headstands without help (walls to lean on) at approx. 18 months.
so, it wasnt that he lacked co-ordination etc.
BUT, he couldnt follow the rules, didnt care about them for the longest time, and had horrible time with loosing, had a hard time with being a team player, passing etc. if he had the puck, he wanted to carry it as far as he could go with it... and when he was checked off the puck, he threw his stick in frustration (beacuse he didnt make it to his desired end.. the goal, or he wasnt finished with the puck yet he yelled out once).. ofcourse this landed him in the penalty box, and if he tantrummed in there.. he was given more time in there... another penalty.. for unsportsmanlike conduct.
also, he did have difficulty with backwards skating, and since he has never been the type to practice anything except video games.. lol... he didnt excell at skating as fast as the other kids who went to hockey schools, power skating practices, and otherwise just practiced even in the team practice times.. unlike son, who liked to skate as fast as he can, and crash into the boards... over and over... as the coach tried to get him involved, and the other kids looked on with smirks.
