Subject: our schools...
In reply to: cheryl 's message, "problem is," on Thu, Apr 17, 08:49:38pm

gear their teaching to the state SOL's (standards of Learning)... nothing more nothing less. Testing begins in third grade... since Daniel is on IEP I pulled him from the testing, pulled him from the standards, pulled him from regualar classroom tests, pulled him from "lectures"... initiated more ABA and hands on learning and testing...

es: for science - he gets no written tests. He will be tought about things by using them. Say pullies.. he will learn how to make different pullings, how they are used and why. he willl demonstrate by using equipment, making pullys.

Pulled from all social studies classroom lectures unless their is a moovie or video about a culture... He will learn how to use maps, globes, different cultures..

we will be usuing aba drills in all settings in school to help him remember and recall.

He does great in math... reads really well, but doesn't have the ability at this point to describe what he has read... hyperlexic. We will be working with comprehension skills. Keyboarding skills.. not just hunt and peck. Composing on keyboard... he will have an "alph smart" laptop next year for writing projects. They wanted to give him one in Kindergarden without teaching him writing skills.... I said "no, he needs to have basic writing skills. He needs to be able to correctly write the letters. When there comes a time that he will require lots of writing, he can have one then, but in the meantime he will learn to write and learn keyboarding skills." (he writes beautifully and can type 13 words per minute using correct hand positions!)

>now they just teach for the tests...

>how many schools ya think will find ways to cheat? Do
>they really think school districts that conspire to
>deny appropriate education for disabled children will
>actually not do everything in their power, NO MATTER
>WHAT, to make sure their kids pass ?*except of course
>to actually teach the children....
>
>and i suppose i shouldnt lump all schools into one
>basket, there are schools and school personnel that go
>above and beyond the call of duty, i just havent seen
>em.....
