Ahh, so things worked out good, I'm glad! God, they sure make a big deal out of little/stupid things, I think. As far as I'm concerned (yeah yeah, I know it's not how it goes), if you buy a place, you should damn well be able to do what you want in there, as long as you're not disrupting your neighbors or commiting a crime (like having a grow-op going on, or a still for homebrew LOL). So you're allowed to have a microwave/hot plate down there, though? I guess if worse came to worse and your tenant really wanted to cook a decent meal, would they be able to use your stove upstairs?
So, the 'rat' was someone who's complained for years, hey? Well I got the impression that THIS is the first time that the Inspector has been there.....so I don't get that. Did the previous owners have a stove down there?
My guess is, the 'rat' is the neighbor on the other side of the duplex. After all, who'd know better than them that there's been a tenant in there...plus, didn't you say that they weren't too friendly/they had a dog and didn't treat it that well/that you all have to share the same deck/backyard and they don't pick up their dog crap or something? Maybe they aren't keen on the fact that your tenant has a Rottie?? How do you get along with them now, after you've been there for a few months?
Geez, who else would even KNOW you had a tenant (unless it's some lamer who sits at home all day peeking out the window, watching the goings on of everyone in the neighborhood lol) AND why would they give a crap? Another thought is...it's someone who's not able to have a legal suite themself/maybe it p*sses them off, so if they can't have one, then they don't think it's fair that you do.
Too bad you couldn't find out exactly WHO it was, but at least you know that it's someone in the neighborhood and not your ex b/f, right?
Some people just have nothing better to do with their lives than stick their noses into other people's affairs.....when I owned my home on the coast, there was this crazy old lady who lived next door, named Mabel. Nobody on the entire street could stand her. She was a shitdisturber with a capital "S"......she would yell at the kids who'd rollerblade across the end of her driveway, accusing them of damaging the inlaid brick (LOL....end of driveway wasn't even her property).....she'd call the City if anyone on the street would park their vehicle the 'wrong way' on the side of the street......she was a total bitch. I used to pull my car up on the lawn (no driveway) to wash it in the summer......I used the end of her driveway (which was "city property")...and there were a few times she'd come out and spray her hose into the open windows of my car. I'm a stubborn cow sometimes, and after trying to make peace with her, I could see it would do no good. The last straw was when she got her grandson's ex EX PSYCH PATIENT's wife and her biker friend to come to my house and beat the crap out of me.
So there I am, one Saturday morning, and I see this 'psych patient' I'd once cared for in hospital and her rough looking pal, on my doorstep. I opened the door, she mentioned who she was and that they wanted to 'talk' to me...I could see them stepping forward to come into the house (remember, this is a tough little coastal/hippie town..lotsa drugs/lotsa bikers/lotsa nuts).....I knew right then and there they were going to clean my clock...so I told them I had to go turn off the tap in the bathroom, that I'd be 'right back'..I closed the door and locked it....called my other neighbors (who'd had years of problems with her, too)..then called the cops and her grandson. It was nasty. The cops were good, her grandson felt sorry for me and knew what a bitch she was........Later, my neighbor (best friend) and I spoke with the crazy biker chick..and she admitted to my face that she and her friend had come over to beat me up. LOL
Also, the old bag had even asked this crazy chick to bring all her biker friends over to my house to 'scare me.'
This was a crazy old hag who, if I was watering my lawn and a sprinkle of water went across the fence onto her DEAD, BROWN LAWN, she would yell in my face and accuse me of 'putting a hole in her lawn'...she was not playing with a full deck. But she was spry and still drove everywhere she went...in better shape than most 50 yr olds.
She finally moved. Thank Christ. She even told one of the other neighbors (who didn't like her) that in the middle of the night, I would "howl like a wolf".....ROFLMAO.
When she moved to Surrey, our whole neighborhood had a party....and they officially named me the "Exterminator"....
That's the only elderly person I've ever lost my temper with...and I one time called her a "f*cking old cow"..I felt awful but was tired of her soaking the inside of my car. Most of the men on the street had told her much worse. When I first moved there, she was so sweet to me......always wanted me to come over for tea, but I was very busy with home renovations, work, friends...never had time. I think that p*ssed her off and that's what caused her to turn on me.
One of the other things she did......she went to her family doc, who happened to be MY family doc, and she told him about this "nurse" who lived next door to her who was 'so mean' and how *I* was upsetting her so much that she was having chest pain!!! (lying old bag). So the next time I went to see my doctor, he asked me about it (so much for maintaining patient confidentiality)...and he was being sorta rude to me....so I let him have it, I was FURIOUS..of course she's told him nothing but bullshit.........and how horrible did *I* look, this RN who was causing this 70 yr old lady so much stress that I was giving her supposed chest pain. My ass!! I chewed a strip off of my doctor and quick, told him he better get both sides of the story before he goes shooting his mouth off..and to come to our neighborhood to get the facts.
So hopefully your experience living there won't be as bad as this LOL
