The Baptists have played an important part in America
in gaining freedom not only for themselves, but also
for others. The 1916 English Baptist Confession said
"the magistrate is not by virtue of his office to
meddle with religion...to force or compel men to this
or that form of religion, or doctrine, but to leave
Christian religion free , to every man's conscience ,
and to handle only civil transgressions".The Baptists
contributed to religious liberty in America more than
any other religious group. The Baptists fought for
freedom FOR religion, not for freedom from
religion.Jefferson on the other hand fought for
freedom FROM religion. The term wall of separation of
church (..."thus building a a wall of separation
between church and state") was coined by a Baptist
named Roger Williams, and not Thomas Jefferson.
Jefferson made popular Williams' famous wall of
separation statement.James Madison described a "line
of separation".In 1791 Baptist leader John Layland
wrote "The Rights of Conscience Inalienable "which
defended life and religious liberty. Leyland saw all
life as sacred ,and he saw the rights of men coming
from God first not government. In 1788 Leyland met
with Madison about Leyland's concerns about the
Constitution. Leyland agreed not to run for office
against Madison and to gain Baptist support if Madison
introduce Bill Of Rights Amendments to the
Constitution which would spell out the freedoms to be
listed, that the Baptists desired.Madison said in 1789
"...There is a great number of our constituents who
are dissatisfied with the Constitution...". Madison
then introduced the (ten) Bill of Rights.
