A mother pleaded not guilty Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter and felony child endangerment charges for allegedly leaving her dead newborn baby wrapped in plastic bags inside a trash bin, prosecutors said.
Hilda J. Figueroa, 29, of Redwood City, is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 20 so attorneys can select a preliminary hearing date. She is free on $100,000 bail.
Figueroa allegedly told doctors last fall she had given birth to a stillborn fetus and flushed the fetus down the toilet. Upon examining her, physicians determined that Figueroa had given birth to a full-term infant.
Police later went to Figueroa's apartment complex in Redwood City and found a dead, fully developed newborn inside a trash bin.
Police said Figueroa later acknowledged that she hid her pregnancy and gave birth Nov. 29, 2005. She told them she did not visit a doctor and that the baby was stillborn."
