Street Preacher Doesn't Back Down
Jessica Morris
"March 18,2007
Being handcuffed, booked, and jailed hasn't stopped one street preacher from giving the Gospel. As NewsChannel 9 first told you last week, police arrested an Athens, Tennessee man who refused to give up his post on a street corner last Sunday (March 11, 2007). One week later, David Decker is at it again.
Armed with streets signs and the Word of God, David Decker was preaching with passion.
“I'm out here to represent Jesus Christ as being your savior. He's the King of kings and he's the Lord of lords that is coming back,” said Decker.
Last week his preaching landed him behind bars when an officer told Decker and his daughter the curbside ministry was a traffic hazard.
“The police officer stormed out of the car and came after me up this very same slope right here and said, 'This is how it's going to be.' And my dad came over, held the Bible in front of him and said, 'This is how it's going to be.' At that time the police officer pushed my dad into the patrol car,” said Carol Decker, Mr. Decker's daughter.
“My name is slandered,” said Mr. Decker. “I never assaulted a police officer in my entire life and now it's out there that I'm a criminal.”
The police report said he put up a fight and even injured officers, but Decker said it's not true and he and his friends will not be moved.
“It's a disgrace! It's unbelievable!” said Ruth Ann Wilson, who joined Decker Sunday on the street corner. “Why would the police be against people repenting of their sins, getting right, and keeping the Ten Commandments? That would make their job a whole lot easier if they would just keep the Ten Commandments.”
Decker was arrested last week and charged with disorderly conduct, two counts of simple assault, and resisting arrest. He's due in court next month.
We talked to police, who told us they had no reason to arrest Decker Sunday, even though he was standing in the same place as last week. "
