Dear lads
As a big Beat fan from the 2tone days, viewing this website set the old memory nodes in action. As a 19 year old when the Beat had their first hit, I along with thousands of others was captivated by their topical lyrics, great melodies and endless energy. From the success of their debut album to 'Whappen' and the vastly underated 'Special Beat Service', the impressive variety in their songwriting always shone through. I even owned the re-mix album, the name of which i cannot recall, including such hits as 'March of the Swivelheads'. I have been an engraver for the last 25 years and remember carving the 'Beat-Dancing Girl' into a piece of brass all those years ago as my practise piece. Other fond memories include being delighted to seeing 'Sting' wearing a 'Beat' t-shirt in the video for ' Don't stand so close to me',seeing them perform on T.O.T.P (the 500th or 1000th show) performing the Andy Williams cover 'Can't get used to losing you' and stealing the show while supporting David Bowie at the Milton Keynes bowl, in one of their last appearances together. More recently Ranking Roger was booked to appear on Mark Lamaar's radio 2 show, but unfortunately problems of one nature or another meant this was cancelled. Although not having seen the boys in concert for many years, I must do my upmost to be entertained yet again. Just a nostalgic point of view, but one that has stirred many a good memory!
