I have recently replaced the synthetic chanter reed in my practice pipes for the first time and every so often the new one sqwaks at a really high frequency. Can someone tell me whether double synthetic reeds need to be broken in before they play reliably? Perhaps I have a bum reed?

Try not to manipulate the reed at all, they do not stand up to the same pinching and poking that GHB chanter reeds can. Get yourself Dental Elastics, the small rubber bands that are used with braces. Put it over the reed and use it as a bridle. Also, try not to overblow the reed, those small plastic reeds are VERY senstivie to pressure. Good luck.
