Was anyone out at the Queen Mary contest this past weekend in California? I hear it was full band instead of mini-band this year. How did the bands sound?

Just curious!

my band competed in grade 2, our first contest at that level. the venue was small, the bands sounded good right down the line (you have to be doing your homework to be ready this early), and the bar was 10 feet from the competition circle which i thought was highly civilized. the only real flaw was a dq of lapd on sunday. that could have been prevented with little problem in my opinion.

Why did lapd get DQ'd?
I thought they played a nice performance, what went wrong?

LAPD was DQ'd because they only had one MSR ready for these pre-season games. The WUSPBA, as well as most pipe band associations require 2 MSR's to be chosen at the line. LAPD played a fine performance. Unfortunately, rules are rules, and they were applied to the letter.

That being said, there is probably a subtext as to why LAPD did not think they needed 2 MSR's for that games. I do not have a clear idea of what that subtext may be. I do know that LAPD came into the games in good faith, and thought they were doing what the games sponsors expected of them. They were also very good sports about the whole thing when they were given bad news. I think it is unfortunate that there couldn't have been better communication between the bands and the games committee.

LAPD remains one of the premier bands in North America. Our band felt quite fortunate to share the field with them at the Queen Mary, and we hold them in the highest esteem as a band, and as individuals. We enjoyed meeting their members and having fun with them following the games. More bands should have the class shown by LAPD.

Thanks Jeff for that note, this really brought back some good memories from last year. If your reading this now, both our bands don't exist and that's a real dam shame.
They were all quite a crew! ;-)

cheers
