Okay, a bit off topic of general bagpiping questions but I seemed to have copied down a Biblical reference to "Pipes" from some bagpiper's closing or sentiment line, perhaps someone from this forum. Well, I lost the reference and my Bible concordance (obviously my version) doesn't mention the "pipes". I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I wanted to use the scripture verse for a project of mine. If anyone knows, please post the verse for me! Thanks so much.

well, there are some passages in the bible that say pipes, but i dont think they mean pipes as in bagpipes, but as flutes.
im am an israeli, and in the original hebrew bible. in hebrew the words pipes means only the pluming pipes, and the word pipes like in bagpipes is flutes.
but maybe im wrong and it is meaning pipes... :)

If you will look at 1st King chapter 1 vs 40, and Jeremiah chapter 48 vs 36 you will find your answer.

Nadav is correct.

The word used in Isaiah 30:29, Ist Kings 1:40, and Jeremiah 48:36 is CHalil (CH = guttural as in Scottish Loch), and mean flute. Chalil goes all around the ancient middle east from Akkadia to Babylon to Ethiopia to Aram, meaning flute, something like a reed, or wood, hollowed out, with holes. No reference to hide bag (CHemet). "bchalilim machlilim" is often translated "piped with pipes," but even in English pipe as a musical instrument for hundreds of years was more likely to mean 1) flute like, or 2)a double reed instrument such as the pibcorn or crumhorn. All bagless.

Hello. If you will look at 1st kings chapter 1 verse 40 and Jeremiah chapter 48.36 you will find your answer. they both refer to the musical pipes, all other times pipes are mentioned refers to our bowel system, or plumbing to drain containers. hope this enlightens you, R Campbell

Tends to be sort of "version related"
American Standard and basic English Translation tend to refer to the woodwind instruments as pipes (not bagpipes though)

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. My concordance didn't help too much because of the instrumentation at the times of the actual writings, and, simply, the traditional views of our church in general limit me to the NIV. I thought someone might have a version which added the "pipes". Like you said, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord" always fits!

I don't know if this is verbatim scripture, but "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord" has always said bagpipe to me.
