1. Set the bagpipe aside and use/get a practice chanter to do your initial learning. It is a lot less stress on you and on family/friends/neighbors than trying to learn the fundimentals on the big pipe.

2. Try to find a local instructor to help you. I had a music background similar to yours. Other than being able to read music, playing brass instruments did little to prepare me for the bagpipe. I grew up in an area which had no other pipers so it was me and the green tutor book. Again, speaking from experience, try to find an instructor learning will go a lot easier.

I would wonder where you got your pipes. There are a lot of poor quality pipes being offeres especially over internet and ebay. I would be surprised if they are one of these if they ever played very well if at all. Get pipes from a reputable dealer of pipes made in Scotland, Canada or USA.

As Paul suggests, get a teacher. You can look at this site: http://www.teachlist.com/
