You really need to find a book on pipes, or a diagram on the internet.....

But I can give a relatively short answer that can help you until then... it's a bit hard to describe but perhaps this can help a little:

There are four reeds. You notice, each reed has hemp on the end to secure it into the hole in which you're inserting it. The holes in which you'll insert the reeds are the chanter top (where it sticks into the stock), and the section of the drone pipes that stick into the stocks.

The small double bladed chanter reed is inserted in the top end of the chanter, where it sticks into the stock -- blade sides towards the bag (where the air is coming from).

There are two medium sized, round cane reeds. These are the tenor drone reeds.

Each tenor drone reed is inserted into the section of the tenor drone pipe that is closest to the stocks (the stocks are the parts that are tied to the bag).

The drone reeds have two ends, one is sealed with wax, the other end has the hole in it, and some hemp windings on it. You insert the end of the reed with the hemp windings on it into the lowest part of the tenor drone pipe -- that section of the drone pipe that is closest to the stocks.

The end of the reed that has the wax seal is pointed towards the bag, and aims into the stock.... where the air will be coming from. The other end is shoved into the lowest part of the tenor drone pipe.

Repeat the process with the largest drone reed -- which is the bass drone reed.

You should be able to push the reeds in securely without breaking them.

If a reed, by accident, falls inside the bag, don't despair. I had this happen once, a long time ago. What you do is take all the pipes off the bag, and then hold the bag up, chanter side down, and sort of shake it a bit until the reed falls down the 'gooseneck' of the bag, and then out the chanter stock.

Good luck with your pipes, and have fun!

I have experimented but I fear
