I just bought a set of Pakistani made bagpipes on E Bay. ( Don't laugh. Just wanted to try them). They did not come with instructions, but I think I put the reeds in the right place. Problem is, I can't get the bag to hold air. Am I doing something wrong? Or are the pipes defective?

If you haven't done it already, go around to your local science store (the one the high school science teachers go to) and buy a set of rubber stoppers to fit all the short posts sticking out of the bag (these are called 'drone stocks') except the one where the blow stick goes. Now blow up the bag. The bag should stay inflated pretty well even when you squeeze it. If it doesn't - try to find the leaks. If the leaks are at the cords tied around the drone stocks, get electrical tape and bind these joints really tightly. Try again. If still leaking - get a new bag.

>Hello Allan, I would suggest to you to get a set of rubber plugs, remove your drones , chanter and all reeds and plug the drones and chanter openings. Then blow your bag as hard as you can and wait for about 45 seconds to a minute. If your problem is a reed problem, your bag should remain inflated with perhaps a breath of air missing. If it does not then obviously your problem is with the bag itself. It could be that the chanter and drone stocks are poorly tied, or the check valve on the blowstick does not work properly. It could also be as you mentioned a reed problem, I suggest you intall one drone at a time with its reed - while leaving the other openings plugged - and then try blowing your bag, do this and see what happens. I hope you can fix your problem without having to by another bag. Sincerly, Bruno Caron.

Hi Allan,
Another thing to try is to blow up the bag with the chanter hole pluged and the drones in place. blow and squeze the bag and the drones should all go silent, being over blown. If they do not you could be losing air through the drone joints.

If you are not willing to get an instructor, then go back to playing the guitar. Probably badly as well.

Dear TX_Piper -

Your mother must have abused you badly as a child. Or should I say last night. How about instead of insulting a new piper, you just kindly STFU.

And to you new piper, I commend your hard work, and sincerely hope that you find a good instructor to replace your last one. Dont listen to wankers like TX.
