i just wanted to added something to your comment -
many people dont like the sound pipes beacuse of this reason - some pipers think that by wearing a kilt and all the other uniform makes you a good piper, and you can hear the result of this in a lot of low level pipers everywhere. ofcourse tradition is immportant, but first learn to play before you learn to dress!

Hi Hal,
ex Black Watch piper, I only hope that the guy you encountered was wearing ex army issue gear, in my years in the Watch I cant say that any pipers were particularly crap, there were some who were not as good as others but none crap, lets hope it was a civvy who had somehow managed to get hold of B.W. No1 Dress. I hope your next encounter with someone in No 1 B.W. dress is better, please dont think we are all like this guy. Take care Wee Tich
