Subject: Rescue Clinic & Rodeo

The Keel Hauler and the Three Rivers Paddling Clubs are holding their annual Slippery Rock Rescue Clinic and Rodeo on June 26 & 27 at McConnell’s Mill State Park in Northwest Pa near I 79 and Rt 422. The Swiftwater Rescue Clinic will be on Saturday and the Rescue Rodeo on Sunday. This event is designed for beginning boaters as well as advanced boaters looking to practice and hone their rescue skills.

The rodeo tests a team’s skill at basic rescue techniques with drills like rescuing a swimming boater and all of their gear. The most interesting part of the rodeo is the scenario, where a team comes upon a rescue scene, is given some basic facts, and then they have to affect a rescue in as short of time as possible, as well they are judged on how well they do the rescue. Last year poor ole “Hapless Harry” was pinned in his boat; he was unconscious and in the middle of the river! The teams had some good, and some not so good techniques, I think everyone realized just how hard a rescue can be, when seconds are ticking away!

So what do the winning teams get besides bragging rights? This year we have prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. There are cash, gift certificates and winner t-shirts for each of the team members. Our sponsors are: Rocky Mountain Kayak, Riversport School of Paddling and The Ohiopyle Trading Post. The 4 person teams must have at least one woman, and one open boat. The open boat can be a canoe, or sit-on-top.

The number of teams will be limited. There is still time, so get your buds together to compete against other clubs and protect your club’s honor! You don’t have to be a Hot Shot boater to do well. This event is just plain fun, and I guarantee that you will learn something. For more information or to apply online go to: www.keelhauler.org/khcc/rescue04.htm
