2.8 is a BARE min at Ferndale. Channelized with lots of rocks. Play is not too good. Still a couple holes. I would not travel any substantial distance if Ferndale is under 3.5'

The max is personal preference. Some people like to play at 8' at Ferndale gauge. Sounds like you found your max level you are comfortable with.

Ferndale = 3' and 5' may as well be two different rivers. Big difference. Pretty big difference between 4' and 5' as well.

Judging from your post, Ferndale = 3.2' - 4' may be good for you.
