Yes, Alicia lived there. "Severita," was the name of the lady who owned the "Tendajito"' we use to buy "pirolis", conos de "pinole" & sometimes una "Nehi" soda. Te acuerdas? Las Nehi's tenian doble la cantidad de la Coca, only 5 cents. La MacDonnal la escuela next to iglesia El Redentor, producio muchos WWII heroes & "successful" people in spite of the low socio-economic level. My Dad was tough on my brother and I; but, let us remember what a struggle it was to make a living during our "NiNES". I made a deal with my Dad ; that if he would let my brother & I sleep at home , we would feed & clothe ourselves with our part-time work. My brother Xavier , got tired of this lifestyle and did exactly as you did; he dropped out and joined the USAF. I stayed to graduate the next year because I was madly in love with Connie Burr. I married her before I joined up, but kept it a secret until after Basic Training. She joined me in Ft. Worth, Tx. & we had a little girl; 3 months later Iwas assigned to French Morocco. Yes brother; we walked the same paths; I asked you one time how you had earned your "Doc" degree & you replied,' With a lot of hard work and $70,000 worth of loans!". I admire you for that & for returning to serve our RAZA. I too returned to serve nuestra RAZA, but unfortunately I had to serve us in Ca. because Laredo politics for teachers were in the control of "Pepe" Martin & his beloved "Nixon". Even after my neighbor and childhood friend, Vidal Treviņo, became the Zar of Education, he didn't believed in my specialty of "Bilingual /Multicultural Ed. That is another chapter. ( in 1970 when I got my M.A. :Laredo had a dropout rate of 80%.) Thanks "Doc" for your compliments. Un fuerte abrazo CHICANO, "El Hueso" de Laredo http://community.webtv.net/DrChili/DrArmandoAyala "Ora es cuando!
