Although I did not leave home to go on "Enganches" to go to either pick fruit, vegetables or cotton or to tend and harvest the beet crops in Michigan, have a little knowledge about that. There were many families that yearly, went to west Texas, Michigan or other areas following seasonal work. Some picking fruit, vegetables and cotton while others went to Michigan to cultivate and harvest the sugar beets. There were some truck and trailer drivers who had their crews and would go hire out while others would go personally with their families. Not sure but most were gone for six months or more going from plantation to plantation. On sugar beets, it was a bit different for head of family would agree to take care of a plot of so many acres and this was done with his family and friends. Most made low wages with hard work. Ones in Michigan seemed to fare better for knew several families who worked hard in Michigan for about six months, and came back home to rest, working when they wanted to and at jobs they selected. They did this by pooling money earned and buying trucks, pickups and cars for everyone who could drive and when back in Laredo, sell them as they needed money, usually keeping a truck for returning next season to Michigan for a return to same routine. One thing bad about this was that children did not get education for they were part of family that worked. Once had someone tell me that he tried to have sons have some education but not his daughters for daughters got married and left. This was lifestyle for many in Lardo in late 30s and early 40s.
