Lately I have been thinking of the old Laredo. I moved away a few years back. Have really no desire to go back, since alot of my family is dead and gone. There's alot of history there, and alot of good memories for me were from Laredo. I grew in La Azteca neighborhood. My grandparents were Jose and Maria Bribiesca, they owned a Loncheria called "Canelas" on Hidalgo St. My mother, rest her soul was named Rose Mary. They were very loving and caring people. My Grandmother used to tell me old stories of when she and my abuelo first met, how they struggled throughout the years to make ends meet. My abuela said she used to wash the millitary men's uniform, and starch them so much that the pants would stand on thier own. (she said that was the way they wanted her to do them) She said they would come knocking on her door each day to have thier uniforms washed & starched. I used to spend summer afternoons with her, listning to her recount stories of her life. She even told me how her mother was Indian, and how she once had a portrait of her mother on her wedding day; dressed in a beautiful headress with pretty feathers. She told me how her and my grandfather had met. All such beautiful stories, that I have had the pleasure of hearing from a woman who has endured much in her lifetime, being an immigrant from Mexico. My mother Rose Mary, had many friends. She helped out alot of people, and always welcomed people to her home strangers and all. She was very giving, very caring. She attended the old San Agustine school, the one that sits next to the old school. She was a beautiful person, like my grandmother...both inside and out. Alot of people knew her. Her funeral mass was beautiful. All her old friends got up, and wallked around the church while singing a farewll song to her. It was very touching. I heard from old friends that Laredo has changed much. I want to remember the way it used to be. Growing up as a child, going to the Old Plaza theater on the weekends, walking downtown, not having a care in the world or being bothered by strangers along the way. Being able to play along the streets with the neighborhood kids, and not having a care in the world. It was so safe then, no one really bothered us. God, how I miss it so much!
