Paula,
You will make a fine teacher. First of all, a good teacher is more than spelling. I think I would always tell your students that you have dyslexia and how it affects you. This will help the other students in your class who are dyslexic or who have other learning problems. You will be a good example of what someone with learning problems can make of themselves. Tell them that spelling is a problem for you. Invite them to tell you when you write something on the board that is misspelled. Make a game out of it. If they are copying something from the board, give them an extra point-or several points-if they find the misspelled words and correct them. Misspell words on purpose to keep them alert.
You will have a better understanding of what it means to struggle with learning, and you will have ideas about how to help those students who are slower in their learning. A teacher with compassion AND skills is hard to find. Fulfill your dream, and fulfill the learning needs of your students. Everyone wins.
I would also venture to say that having dyslexia has made you a go-getter; someone who does not give up, someone who
applies yourself.
I say, go for it.
