Hi Joan,
I am the mother of a 21-yr-old son who is dyslexic and having a very difficult time in community college. We were told when he was in kindergarten that he had a "mild" LD --dyslexia was never mentioned. He got some help from an occupational therapist and tutoring. When we moved to a new school district he at the top of his class in everything (except spelling!) throughout elementary school and even in middle school got such good grades that the schools kept saying they wouldn't give him an IED. Then came high school. He did well in the first two years and had a 4.1 weighted gpa because he took so many advanced courses. But his LD caught up with him in his 11th year and his grades plummetted. He got so despondent in the spring of his senior year that he just quit going to classes.
Meanwhile, we got him tested at the end of grade 10 and were told that he was indeed dyslexic. We had several meetings with counselors and administration at the high school, but they were adamant that he didn't need an IEP. Then when his grades began dropping they said it was a behavior problem and he needed to fix it. He graduated with a 1.9 weighted gpa.
So now he's taken one year off to work at an auto body shop, which helped with his executive functioning. He did poorly in his first year at community college and has just finished another semester where he's not done well either.
I need to get him help but I don't know where to turn.
Any advice?
