The starter uses a roller clutch assembly inside the crankcase, not a bendix.

The roller clutches generally don't wear out too often. They can become gummed up however, if the oil is not clean, or too heavy which may be the case for you in the winter.

Try a synthetic oil, and a good battery. Cheap auto store batteries are often more problems than they're worth. You can buy an Interstate battery, built by Yuasa, for about $100. Interstates are handled by many resellers.
