For us it's:
Vacation pure and simple,
meeting new people, though we aren't very good at it, but are working on it,
Seeing sights (tourist things, national monuments, etc),
Sharing a common item, such as Voyager, motorcycle, etc,
I'm not sure if one is more important than the other. For us, it's getting away from work/home. I do enjoy seeing the same bike in numbers, because it is rare to see Voyagers in quantities. I have enjoyed seeing familiar faces year after year. I was sorry to have missed this year's rally for two reasons: not seeing the people, and not seeing the sights (Mt Rushmore to be exact).
Looking forward to Bowling Green. Got my Voyager's Voice yesterday. Looking forward to the pre-rally dinner at the Vette museum. We enjoyed the pre-rally dinner in Asheville a bunch.
Chris
