Put it on something and see how long it lasts. I have put it on a squeky door hinge, but it never lasts long. Singer sewing machine oil is supposed to be a good oil also, but I have no idea what it is.

I know the can says lubricates, but so does water as it is in a liquid form, but I wouldn't put it in my cables either. It isn't as bad as a brake cleaner, but WD40 has never worked well for me as a long time lubricating product and I will not use it for that. I use it to clean out the cable sheath and the cable, and then lubricate it will something different. My opinion. Do as you wish.
