At work (when I was working) I used to use a product called "TriFlow". It sounds just like what you describe. I thought it was the greatest thing since.....

You still don't see it around much, but it is available. I prefer it to WD40. It is really, basically a WD type lubricant, but with the teflon component. It just works great.

I would use it on cables, linkage, anywhere a light lubricant is warrented.
