Hey Fritz, I live in Ontario and the single payer system just means that the Provincial Gov't pays for most medical expenses with some exceptions.

The Healthcare System is paid for out of our Income Taxes so we don't normally pay for Medical Services ( like I said with some exceptions )

Alot of the regular services are available in fairly short order ( not all services are slow like the brain surgery outlined in the video ). However, there are some very slow procedures or testing that can be very slow i.e. MRI's and some specialized surgeries.

The problem is three-fold the way I see it;

1) Like all Gov't funded systems there is never really enough money to do proper justice to the delivery of the services because of larger global demands on budget funds.
Expensive equipment such as Cat Scan ( MRI machines ) and so on keep getting shuffled to the back of the funding heap.

2) There are not enough Medical Students graduating because of expensive tutition and lengthy schooling.

3) We losse a very high percentage of our Doctor's and other Medical Specialists to the U.S. because they can make more money there as invoicing of the patient is more profitable than invoicing the Gov't who has set caps on what they can charge.

I like really like the premis of Universal Gov't funded healthcare like we have, but contrary to our Gov't I beleive we should also be allowed to have a parallel private pay healthcare system for those who either can afford it or don't wish to spend the wait time for the public system. In my view a parallel provate system would take some of the pressure off the public system in which case they may be able to reduce wait times.

My 2 cents worth !
