Your experts aren't I'm sorry to say. The FR-4 boards may be coated, but the components aren't. And neither are the connectors, as you mentioned, nor are the switches, displays, and other controls.
An electronic device that isn't designed for use outside will not likely survive even one rain event. Sometimes, since they are mostly low voltage devices, they will start to work again when thoroughly dried out, but you can't count on that.
