I can tell you from experience that my speedo has drifted since I bought it roughly a year ago. When I bought the bike, I noticed almost immediately the speedo was way off. In order to keep up with traffic on the road I normally drive, it's a 55 mph 4-lane with people usually driving 60-65 mph, I had to put the speedo between 70 and 75 mph. Not being convinced, I checked it against a GPS unit that I strapped onto the bike and that was verified by a roadside radar station that I passed everyday for about a month. My actual speed was being shown to be 67 mph at an indicated 75 mph. At that point, I didn't pay any attention to my tach. Well, fast forward to last week. I was tooling down the road with the cruise set to an indicated 75 mph, just like I always do, when suddenly the flashing blue lights appeared!! Yikes, I thought. The officer informed me I was doing 71 mph. I get a ticket and off I go. Once I gave him plenty of time to clear out of the area, I take it back up to the indicated 75 mph and note my engine speed, 3,400 rpms. The next morning at work I start crunching numbers only to discover I was in fact going 71 mph! At that point I start a listing of actual speeds at corresponding engine speeds. Once I get that list made, I strapped the GPS unit on the bike again and took off down a less traveled interstate. Starting at 2,600 rpms, which is roughly 55 mph, I bump the cruise up 100 rpms at a time and drive several miles to make sure the speedo and GPS unit are stablized. My speedo is now less than 5 mph off at an indicated 75 mph.

I have not replaced any parts nor had any problems with my bike's speedo, so I really don't think I've got any chipped or loose gears. Needless to say, I have laminated that chart and now I drive by the tach.
