I could see where a mile marker can be off by several feet due to exit ramps, bridges, etc. Over a distance they should average out. Now that a lot of highways are renumbering exits to match mile markers, it is making estimating time to exit a lot easier.

I have been in caravans of various types of vehicles and have learned that even different makes of cars are off from each other by as much as 5 mph at highway speeds.

I'm not sure what the big deal is unless you are trying to run at the "magic" 9 miles over the speed limit thinking that you will avoid a ticket.
