My father used to work at the Dunlop factory at Speke during the l960's until l979, when he was made redundant. I was wondering if the factory site still exists - I have seen references to the Dunlop club and boys football team.
I would like to know more about when it closed down and why? Does anyone have any photos of the factory?

hiya everyone

well i stumbled across your site , quite by accident , but having read all the messages , i felt i had to say hello , as i still live in speke ( west speke ) and for anyone who hasnt been here for a while , will be in for a shock lol , as the dove and olive and the pegasus has been knocked down , also the fox hotel , is going to be the new dunlops club ( as the old one is being knocked down to make way for a car park for the airport ) all hallows school has gone and is now a housing estate ) and speke comp school has been knocked down too ( the two schools are now one big school in the centre of speke called parklands high school ) also stockton wood school is no longer there , it was pulled down about 2 years ago to make way for a new school , by the same name only its on the opposite side, with the entrance on all saints road. also the old airport is now a hotel ( the marriott hotel ) we have a new airport john lennon airport all with 2 other new hotels near by . we also have a new shopping mall and the old parade is being pulled down very soon .

hope this information was helpful and i would be happy to help out with any questions you have about speke.

take care & great site

Sue Hall

ps if anyone remember me or my family , feel free to get in touch we lived in Conleach road from 1969 - 1980 ( i moved back to speke when i married in 1993 ) thanx

Does anyone remember the Birdman falling to his death at the Speke / Liverpool Airshow back in the 50's. As far as I remember he became tangled in his parachute and landed in a field in Hunts Cross area.

I moved to Speke in 1941 and my first memory was the POW camp in the field at the back of my house that was to become Speke Comp playing field. The Italian prisoners used to make birds on sticks for us.
I used to get told off for telling them my mums name because they used to call her all the time. I also remember the soldiers at the end of the road on guard. Our road was the last road on the Speke estate and the top
half of Lovel road were the half houses. We could see all the way to Hale from the back bedroom. We used to walk there every Sunday along Hale Road past Stevensons, the cottage that used to sell sweets - and everything else.

At the bottom of Western Avenue there were 4 shops, the CO-OP, The Butchers, The Chemist and Berties. The leckie House in Tewitt Hall, the cottages and the Smithy at the now crescent. I remember one of the cottages that mum used to take us to, we had to have codliver oil then orange juice - I can still taste the oil now. I remember the cafe at
the bottom of Western was Tommy Butlers!

On the corner of Oglet Lane was the Baptist Church. I think Mrs Graham was the teacher, further down the lane was Mr Bleeze's house, then the old RAF huts that later on became the British Legion. My dad Henry Page was one of the founder Members when he came home during the war(1943). Back then there where no pubs in Speke which made the legion the first pub/club.

your name sounds familiar to me. I used to live in Little Heath Rd (number 70)in the 50s before moving to OZ we used to stack the bricks in our backyard for the church that was being built on the cnr of the close.
If this is your era it would be good to hear more.

Hi everyone,
Ilived in Speke from 1951-1978. Firstly in the prefabs in Sandgate roadD which was at the bottom of Dymchurch road and Appledore road. Has anyone any photos or memories of these prefabs? Remember walking to St Christophers school past the crescent,( Did the newsagents there incorporate a post office inside) and the Smithy/Library. Miss France the school secretary lived in the row of houses opposite the library. Mr morgan the headmaster a strict disciplinarian(they all were in those days) I remember watching re-runs of the 1960 European cup final between Real Madrid (7) and Eintracht frankfurt(3) when the football pitch was frozen or unplayable. Moved to Damwood Road in 1959. My parents still live there opposite Hinckley walk. Happy days spent in the Damwoods and sliding across frozen ponds in the fields around the woods in the winter. Being chased by the farmers alsation dog in the fields between the woods and the river before the airport runway was builtin the summer. Later on Nights and saturday afternoons spent in Dunlops club honing my snooker skills, and of course the Pegasus pub. The bar and lounge were packed at weekends and the dunlops workforce kept it busy in the week. Anyone remember me or my family, my brothers Michael, and Kevan and sisters Pat and maureen.

Hi, my name is Pamela Benson, but before marriage was Pamela Shaw, my parents were Stan and Flo Shaw, we lived in Leafield Road, Hunts Cross, Mum and Dad worked at Distillers/Penicillin, Bees Seeds, Evans Medical Supplies, and E.R. Squibbs. What I really would like to know is: Does anybody remember Speke Baptist Church when it was a little wooden hut at the end of (not sure whether it was Eastern or Western Ave) I remember getting (I think!!) the no. 80 bus from Hunts Cross, Sunday mornings, then back to sunday school in the afternoon, then back again for church at night. After church at night we would go around to the choir masters house, all I can remember was that his name was Cliff, and he had a sister called Millie. You know, they were the happiest days of my life, we used to go on trips with church to Llangollen and Llandudno at eastertime, I would really love to hear from anybody who attended this church around 1951 to 1956. Thanks, Pam Benson,. nee Shaw

Hello Denise.....as far as I am aware.....in 1950 there was no such road as Hayfield Road in Speke. I believe at that time the last road in Speke on the new estate ( which we referred to as anything the other side of Lovel Road)was Harefield Road and then Conleach Road. The North and South Parade hadn't been built at that time. Even today I don't believe that there is a road named Hayfield. Hope that helps you.

I have just spent an enjoyable few hours browsing these and other pages about Speke. I lived on Burnage Close and attended Central Avenue School with Chris Wicksted and Jimmy MacDougal. My family emigrated to Canada in 1959 but like many ex Liverpudlians the older I get the more I remember the great childhood spent in Speke. If anyone recalls the Edwards family ( Fred and Emily with sisters Anne and Carol ) I would love to hear from them. Thanks again to those who spent the time to make this site so memorable.

Hi every one nice to see the site up and running again, thanks to Tom. A lot as happened over the last Two years. Stockton Wood Road School as gone, just a heap of rubble. We had an reunion before it closed and it was nice to see so many old friends and photo's. It was great to be able to cross the line between the boys and girls dept's without getting the cane. Mr Kellet (age 92) was there and looked as fit as ever.

So come on every one and get all your old photo's out and put them on the site along with your memories.

Do you remember the Cine Club making a 16mm Film of the trip.I never saw it as I was off School when it was shown to the rest of the school. I would live to know were it is and also get in touch with any one who went on that holiday.
