it excluded discussion about what I think is a perfectly legitimate thing: reviews, or simple "critique," as opposed to "concrit" aimed at the author. She had some remarks in there suggesting that the only people who would want to make negative remarks about fanfic are people who have a variety of petty, egotistical or mean-spirited motives -- a premise I disagree with. (Later, she clarified in the comments that she wasn't talking about reviews/critique posted in community settings and therefore wasn't condemning that activity.)

I've come to the conclusion that "concrit" *is* best done in private, by people who are invited to do so. But "critique" is a different animal altogether and has a legitimate -- and public -- place. The question is how to balance these things in a setting where authors are directly confronted with critique, without flamewars and anguish. Not an easy question.
