The small amount of reading I've done about the intended demographics of television lays out a more convoluted map. Early on, television took most of its strategy from radio, which was skewed more towards women, especially during the daytime, but then it shifted to a fairly clear division -- women during the day and men in the evening. Originally, the advent of cable was seen potentially as a total paradigm shift, and there has been a fracturing of markets for cable-only networks, but in the broadcast (and wanna-be broadcast) networks it's still guys, guys, guys at night, where the big money is.
