My heart is pounding. “You get rid of them.”

He does.

I stare through the dirty windscreen as he ushers the children from the car, my gloved hands tightly clenched. When he returns – alone – he glances at me. “It was a mistake to bring them.”

Beneath his reproachful words, I hear uncertainty. The car lurches forward, then stops, his gaze straying to the rearview mirror. Pity – and something else – burns in his eyes, making me catch my breath.

Please. Please.

He puts the car into reverse.
