I assume the "shyte story" you read was Mark's Raiders of Lynn Canyon column, where he says, "Getting to Lynn Canyon meant driving straight through another small town whose name I forget."

1) Lynn Canyon is NOT in Vancouver, it's in North Vancouver. Which is as separate from Vancouver as Coquitlam is from Port Coquitlam. And I can forgive Mark for thinking the very rural area he was driving through wasn't part of North Vancouver, because the area near the canyon is more rustic than the ass-ends of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

2) Mark is Canadian, not American. Maybe you missed this on his mainpage:

Country of origin:
Good day, eh?
Canada

3) Yeah, many Americans are pretty ignorant of the world outside the American borders, but I'll take ignorant over rude any day, John.

Of course it's in Vancouver, Mr. John, that's why when my friends took me to it we had to drive OUT OF THE CITY FOR HALF-AN-HOUR! Based on that logic, my hometown is Edmonton.

And you've got to watch it there, Mr. John. Talking like this around my American co-workers got me branded a racist.
