Subject: annual Independent Living Conference

Greetings!

The Statewide Independent Living Council of TN would like to invite you to participate in the second annual Independent Living Conference held Thursday, October 17, 2002 with the Doubletree Hotel in Nashville, TN. The agenda will consist of a number of nationally and statewide recognized leaders who have contributed to the independent living movement for individuals with disabilities.

Commissioner Joanne Wilson, from the Rehabilitation Services Administration, will begin the conference while Bobby Silverstein, J.D. will serve as keynote speaker. Silverstein, J.D., Director of the Center for the Study and Advancement of Disability Policy in Washington D.C., will be presenting on "A Congressional Insiders View "How To Be An Effective Disability Policy Change Agent". He has more than 25 years of experience providing policy analysis, research and technical assistance to policy-makers and negotiating and drafting public policy at the federal, state and local levels. As primary advisor to Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Disability Policy, Mr. Silverstein played a central role in all disability policy legislation produced between 1987 and 1997, including the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act.

Serving on a systems advocacy panel along with Bobby Silverstein, will be Assistant Commissioner, Carl Brown of the TN, Division of Rehabilitation Services, and Carol Westlake, Executive Director of the Tennessee Disability Coalition. Presenting about the Independent Living Movement in Tennessee will be Deborah Cunningham, Executive Director for the Memphis Center for Independent Living and Glen Barr, Chair of the Statewide Independent Living Council and Director for the Jackson Center for Independent Living.
