Subject: Wheelchair-ramp from a user's perspective, please!

I *may* have the opportunity to build-in a ramp to one door of my house, as I prepare it for sale in the coming year. It's an old house and improving on the 32-inch doors would be cost-prohibitive, but there is a shot at a ramp. I know there are Fedgov parameters regarding the pitch--but beyond appeasing the bean-counters:

I would appreciate some input from some folks who depend on such ramps. Is the pitch required by Fedgov cool, or if space permits an easier slope would that be helpful? I know what I think, but I walk. AND... What if the surface is ...textured, to discourage skateboarders? Your inputs would be welcome.
