 Recent studies have revealed that the interstellar gas in the outer regions of the "Black Eye" galaxy (M64) rotates in an opposite direction to the gas and stars in the inner regions.

It is believed that the oppositely rotating gas arose when M64 absorbed a satellite galaxy that mearged with it, more than one billion years ago.
