  The EMERLAD ISLE DANCE SOCIETY (representing GC in Windsor) has been selected to receive the 2008 Community Health Promotion Award for an “Outstanding Business who has demonstrated a commitment to the enhancement of healthy lifestyles in our community” by the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association of Ontario.
  
  We didn't even know we'd been nominated!
  Mary Kay Lucier (BANA's ED) attended the Windsor fundraiser and told Jackie Moriarity, EIDS President, she was very impressed with the dancers, especially the level of physical fitness and the different body types among the dancers. Other recipients of the award include the Dove campaign for real beauty. Not bad company!
  
  Jackie M will be accepting on behalf of the school and EIDS at their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 18th 2008 at 6:30pm @ the Caboto Club of Windsor.

• OIDA is Arranging Another Bus Trip - Everyone Can Participate -- The OIDA, 05:37:47 05/06/08 Tue
  Hello
  
  The OIDA is organizing a bus trip to the Nation's Capital Feis in Washington D.C. (Arlington, Virginia to be specific), which is approximately nine hours away.
  
  The feis will be held on July 26 and 27, and will run on the same weekend as St Catherines Feis. It is not our intention to detract business from the St Catherines Feis; the two events simply happen to fall on the same weekend.
  
  The bus will leave Oakville early on the Friday morning (the 25th) and return after the dancers are finished on the Sunday (thus getting in late). Tickets are $85 per seat and this price includes return transport by coach plus an equal share toward the driver's expenses (hotel, meals, tolls, parking and tip). Hotel accommodation is extra.
  
  The OIDA has not decided where the group will stay but is committed to an affordable yet convenient location. The official hotel is going for $125/night as long as rooms are still available. The Marriott website has slightly cheaper rates on their site but they only come with strict pre-pay and 'no cancellation' restrictions. The OIDA will arrange a block of rooms and each family will book/pay for them from the block of reserved rooms. Registration has just opened with e-Feis (link below) but with a cap of 1000, there should not be any trouble getting in. The host teacher of the feis has already been e-mailed to inform her that we are planning this trip and to expect our entry. (I have already received a reply and she is delighted to hear that we may be attending. She has offerend to provide information to satisfy all of our sight-seeing and shopping desires.)
  
  Seats will go on sale Wednesday May 14th at the studio - first come, first served. There are no limits to number of seats per family and families with dancers at ANY LEVEL are welcome to sign up. In order to reserve the seat, a cheque for the total amount of the seats booked is required. The cheque may be post-dated no later than July 7th, 2008. Should you need to cancel and we are without a wait list, you will need to find someone else to take your booking (and submit a new cheque).
  
  The feis will run for two days and will be divided by level. Beginner, Adult, PC and OC will be on Saturday. AB, Nov and PW will be on Sunday, along with teams. This feis has a crazy syllabus with loads of extra specials. For example, PC and OC dancers can do opposite hardshoe, set comps, trad set comps and treble reels. There is also a hard-shoe choreography competition on Saturday for PC and OC dancers that we will consider doing. I think something similar to The Pirates from the Claddagh Ball would blow everyone away (minus the mistakes, hopefully).
  
  Dancers competing on Saturday can sight-see and/or shop on Sunday, and vice versa.
  
  Benefits:
  -try a feis in a new region
  -visit historic Washington DC
  -have a fun weekend away with the GC community
  -feis without driving (and this includes the kids "driving" you nuts asking "are we there yet?" - they'll have so many friends to hang out with that the time will fly by)
  -watch High School Musical and High School Musical 2
  -meet new familes
  -expose your newer dancer to the wonderful world of feising, surrounded by several seasoned feis-goers
  -be a part of something special
  
  
  Bus trips to: (1) really far, (2) semi-far and (3) not that far locations are something the OIDA is hoping to be able to provide throughout the year. We are confident that there will be enough interest to move forward. There are 56 seats on this particular bus but if we can sell 112; we will.

  I'm home for the summer and taking names for private lessons for dancers of all levels. If you're looking for lessons between now and the end of August I can teach in my home or yours at the following times:
  
  Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri- ANY time before 5pm
  Tuesday- ANY time before 6pm
  Saturday- Any time before 5pm
  Sunday- Any time after 1pm

  Most Oakville dancers are at the Scarborough Feis. Windsor dancers are divided between the Cincinnati Feis (Ryan is there judging too!) and the South Bend Indiana Feis.

• Oakville Feis Registrations -- OIDA and OFA, 13:25:45 04/28/08 Mon
  The Oakville Feis will be held on August 23, 2008 and registrations are now open. We are pleased to announce that the registration for all Oakville dancers will be paid for out of our bingo fundraising. There are 3 ways to register: 1) complete a hard copy of the syllabus at the studio and leave in the mailbox, 2) print off a copy of the syllabus from the website and leave completed in the mailbox 3) register online at feisweb and indicate 'mail in payment' option.   I have received about 7 emails recently from G-C asking me to list their dress. Unfortunately, my computer is down and at this point I cannot make any website changes. I am using my husband's computer and it does not have the programmes needed make the changes.
  
  Also, to those who ask how to get the dress listed, here are the instrucions from the website:
  "Please send one photo of the dress no more than 350 pixels in height along with a description and dress measurements."
  This means you must send photos that have been reduced in size and the wording needs to be something I can copy and paste. This is a free service and it takes a lot of time to edit photos and wording.

• Second Home for Used Irish Dance Shoes – St. Malachy Irish Dancers -- Imelda Kearney, 09:40:54 04/30/08 Wed
  If anyone has any used Irish dance shoes no longer needed - I know of some kids who could put them to good use.
  
  There is a teacher at one of our elementary schools in Scarborough who runs an Irish dance program for students in her school. She teaches the kids at lunchtime and has a great group of girls and boys in her troop. The Irish dance program is run through volunteers within the school.
  
  A former dancer herself, the teacher started teaching students some Irish dance steps as a way to get the kids to participate in DPA (daily physical activity), for better coordination, balance, for helping to build teamwork and for some exercise herself. It’s a great example of the benefits of Irish dancing and what Irish dancing is all about. The kids in this school really enjoy dancing and teachers often see boys and girls skipping through the halls or doing their one, two, threes when no one is watching them...
  
  If there are any unneeded used shoes you can donate - your used shoes would be put to good use. Thanks to Barb for your help with this.
  
  I will leave a box in the studio labelled St. Malachy Irish Dancers and you can drop in any used shoes that you no longer need. I will pick up the shoes each month and send them to the kids at the school.

  The Second hand sale seemed to be a big success this weekend. We outfitted many of our beginner and advanced beginner dancers into costume and wigs.
  
  The bins are now overflowing with shoes and wigs. There are still plenty of school costumes for sale if any more dancers are interested.
  
  See me about getting your dancer ready for their next feis.

• GC Spirit Wear and Gear -- OIDA, 13:35:04 04/21/08 Mon
  Don't delay, get your orders in. Samples of the spirit wear are now at the Oakville studio and will remain there until Sunday April 27th. Please feel free to try them on ,at the studio of course, to ensure you order the correct size.
  
  If you would like to order any of these great items, complete an order form (available at the studio) and provide full payment with your order. Cheques are payable to: Oakville Irish Dance Association. Orders and cheques can be given directly to me or, place them in the black mailbox in the studio.
  
  All net proceeds of the 2008 GC spirit wear sales will be used to further support our dancers and the dance community throughout the year.

  Hi Everyone,
  
  My daughter Siobhan has retired from Irish Dance and we have two dresses for sale. Siobhan is now 15 and the one dress is suitable for a 15 yr old approximately 5'5. The other dress she wore two years ago. They are both in excellent condition, and they both came from within the school. Siobhan is the second owner of both dresses. I will post the dresses on Dance Again, but I wanted someone within the school to have the first opportunity. If you would like pictures of the dresses I would be more than happy to send them. Just email me.

  Hi Everyone,
  
  Here are the directions to the KofC Oakville.
  
  From the QEW, exit at Third Line. Go South on Third Line to Speers Road. Turn Left on Speers Road and then a very quick Right on to Wallace. The Knights will be on your right hand side at the first curve in the road.
  
  If you are Staying at Bronte & Speers in one of the hotels, turn South on Bronte Road. Turn Left on Speers and follow it just through Third Line. Then turn on Wallace.
  
  
  Just a reminder to everyone who has a perpetual trophy from 2007 that they need to be returned this week.
  
  There will be racks for Second Hand Solo Costumes. Please bring what you have. There are plenty of dancers looking.
  
  Dancers in Beginner, Advanced Beginner and Novice are to compete in class attire. For dancers looking for school attire, we will be holding a second hand sale on Sunday, April 27th from 2-4 at the Oakville Studio. More information to follow.
  
  Dancer who do not currently have a class costume may dance in a skirt and shirt or shorts and a t'shirt at the school feis.
  
  We will have the vendor "GOLD & SHAMROCK" on hand for all your dance needs. The New GC spirit wear will be available in a full size run for you to be fitted into the appropriate sizes.
  
  A stage schedule was emailed to everyone on Monday Morning. If you did not receive it, email me by clicking on my name in the heading.
  
  If you have any questions about the day, don't hesitate to ask.

  The new line of GC Spirit Wear is now available to order. Order forms are being sent home this week with your dancer. If you don't recieve a copy, email me and I will forward it to you.
  
  The line includes jackets, dance pants, dance shorts, racer back tanks, underdress tops, headbands, waterbottles, feis blankets, dufflebags, dressbags and T's.
  
  For the guys, we have a new GC bowling shirt and the T is also available in black and yellow, not shown on the order form.
  
  A full range of sizes will be available at the GC School Feis so you can try on sizes and order the correct size.
  
  Thanks to the OIDA for taking on this venture. The new line is just what the dancers have been asking for and the colour/quality is fab! Hope you all like it.
