Thanks, Frits
I know he was not a replacement. I saw his jump school diploma and it was dated in 1942. I also saw photos of him in Africa and Italy. I think he must have landed a "staff" job and didn't jump into combat or participate in front line service until late in the war. I remember him talking about crossing the Elbe river which would tie in with his Rhineland entitlement to a CIB. He also stated that he was in HQ Company --- maybe it was Battalion or Division HQ. He said he had 13 jumps while in service. I served with the 82nd in the 80's and he asked me how many jumps I had made. I had more than him, but I told him his were better since they were combat jumps during WW2. That's when he told me he never made a combat jump. I guess he must be pretty unusual in that he served the entire war with the 82nd and didn't make a combat jump.
I am trying to get a copy of his discharge certificate from his daughter to get more information. Are there any other sources that may have info? I live near Ft. Bragg. Do you think the Division museum or Airborne special ops museum will have what I need?
Thanks Chris
