Subject: Seems like a long time ago question

A famous poster on this board, long ago, related a story (short story) of a town that had locked up someone in a very cruel situation, allowing the town's folk to be perpetually happy and prosper.

Does anyone remember the title of the story and name of the town?

and I am glad to see some of the names posting I remember from years past

john

. . . except that the person was stoned to death, not imprisoned.

A lot of the New Yorker readers at the time thought it was a thinly-disguised Lexington, MA, but I don't believe the town was named in the story. The stoning was supposed to ensure a good harvest.

I'm fairly sure the one mentioned was by Ursula Le Guin: "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas"

The name of the town being Omelas.
