Spike still deciphered the wall description instantaneously, in the season 7 episode at the Gilroy mission. His language skills hadn't really atrophied. In season 2, he only kept Dalton around for show.

There's Babylonian - words like "girsequ"...which...is...probably not what Spike was talking about, but I'm sure they had words for other things. Maybe in that book of protections spells Anya couldn't decipher? Jonathan seemed to recognize it as Babylonian....

And here I thought I was the only one who hoped William had written My Secret Life...whew, what a relief to know I'm not alone in my depravity. Do you suppose William really *had* a secret life, or just a really, really vivid imagination?

Our depravity, that is. William must have had a secret life because he had absolutely no imagination. All this harking and larking about twixt wee beaks, not to mention all his effulgent bulging. All the hallmarks of a bloody awful pornographer posing as a bloody awful poet. I never really got the blushing mid-twenties virgin thing for dear, sweet William anyway. He's a wealthy man with a doting mother living in the capital city in the most powerful country in an era noted for its hypocrisy in sexual matters.

Prostitution was endemic in Victorian times, a woman who was seduced (today this would often be recognized as rape) by her employer and became pregnant could be put out on the street with nothing. She was ruined and prostitution was her only option. I find it hard to believe that a man as pampered and spoiled and self-satisfied as William remained a virgin. He was a romantic but being a romantic is not necessarily synonymous with chastity. Getting laid wouldn't have been difficult for him. He wants Cecily as his wife not as a sexual partner.
