Subject: computers haven't really been a sign of good things in the verse
In reply to: Ramses 2 's message, "Hey kids! Lets talk Leitmotifs" on 11:17:03 08/06/05 Sat

Much as smoking and leather pants were short hand for evil. Computers were really the first sign we had that all was not well with Willow. And even the last instance of computers we had in the verse gave no answer to Willow and Giles regarding the scythe...computers simply were rather useless next to books. I'm not sure it's a leitmotif but it's definitely a thing with Joss.

Computers and computer skills were important to the effectiveness of the Scoobies from the beginning. Starting from "The Harvest" when Willow calls up the map of the tunnels that Buffy needed. There are many other examples of important information acquired using computers. Even Giles recognized the usefulness of computers (and of Willow's skills with them) properly used.

Note that while the computer didn't give "the answer" to Willow and Giles, it did give a clue that put them on the right track. And it appears to have been how they learned where the right "pagan tomb" was located.

Also note that while some of the same personality traits that eventually got Willow into trouble with magic do show up when she's "computer girl", she doesn't actually get into trouble until AFTER she largely abandons computers in favor of magic.
